Each year these magnificent creatures migrate south from Alaska, and although you can see them throughout Hawaii, the ‘Au‘au channel off the coast of Maui boasts the greatest number. The warm, relatively shallow and protected waters make an ideal location for the humpbacks to mate and give birth to their calves. These whales are known for their acrobatics, and are often seen fully breaching out of the ocean!

Sail With The Whales Mā’alaea
Set sail with the whales aboard their 47’ performance sailing catamaran the “Paragon”. Sail Maui prides their selves on sailing, so you can enjoy relaxing to the natural sounds of the sea and sail as they shut down the motors.
The Au’au Channel, nestled between Maui and the neighboring islands, is a haven for Pacific humpback whales. These gentle giants choose Maui’s protected, shallow waters for winter breeding. Our Afternoon Sail provides a unique opportunity to witness these whales in their natural setting, enhanced by your expert crew’s insights in a serene, uncrowded atmosphere. This vessel offers ample seating, including shaded areas and bow trampolines, designed for an intimate, exclusive sailing experience with limited guest capacity of 25.
We generally spot humpbacks on all of our trips during the winter, but this season we’re offering an exciting opportunity to sail with the whales! We’ll embark from Mā’alaea harbor and set sail in the afternoon tradewinds. This trip is exclusively sailing, so we can head to wherever the whales may be.

- Tour departs at 8:00 a.m. & returns at 9:30 a.m. (1.5 Hours)
Morning Tour
- Check in at 9:30 AM, at Mā’alaea Harbor, slip #72
- Tour departs at 10:00 a.m. & returns a 11:30 a.m. (1.5 Hours)
Midday Tour
- Check in at 11:30 AM, at Mā’alaea Harbor, slip #72
- Tour departs at 12 p.m. & returns at 1:30p.m. (1.5 Hours)
